September 2007 - Relaunch Of the Puffer Spartan

The puffer “Spartan” is the flagship of the Scottish Maritime Museum and features on the museum’s logo. In 1984, when the fledgling museum was begun, “Spartan” was given to the museum by the West of Scotland Boat Museum Association (now the SMHA) and sailed from Bowling to Irvine by Captain Brian Douglas.

Built in 1942 as VIC 18, at Hay’s shipyard in Kirkintilloch on the Forth and Clyde canal, she was one of the last VICs built during the second world war. The navy used puffers as victual ling ships. Designed to carry large cargoes they were ideal for the purpose. “Spartan” was returned to J & J Hay at the end of the war and she continued in the puffer trade until 1974 when she was sold to the Glenlight shipping company. In 1980 she was withdrawn from service and laid up in Bowling basin. The West of Scotland Boat Museum Association purchased her in 1982 for £1.

Normally resident at the museum’s pontoons, “Spartanhad been on the slipway for some time undergoing restoration work. Corroded bulwarks and thin plates have been replaced and her interior has also received attention.

Puffers were once a common sight on the Firth of Clyde and west coast of Scotland. They were a lifeline for the islands, bringing cargoes of coal, grain for distilleries, bricks and even domestic “flittings”. To make their journeys more profitable they tried to ensure return cargoes such as barrels of whiskey. Immortalised in Neil Munro’s “Para Handy” tales, puffers have a special place in Scottish maritime history. The life was hard, especially on the steam-driven boats and yet the crews were wedded to their trade.

The Puffer Spartan was relaunched in Irvine Harbour on the 27th August 2007 for photographs of the launch please follow the Link.
